Something is wrong and you've been trying to fix it. Your relationship feels like a roller coaster and you’ve lost track of how many times you’ve fought about the same issues over and over. You feel caught in an endless and disastrous feedback loop with no idea how to get out. You and your partner want this to work out but you’re just pushing each other further apart.

Therapy can be a place to explore the places where a couple gets stuck. The couple and the therapist work as a team to more deeply understand each other and improve connection and attachment.

What does couples therapy look like?

An initial session will be used to determine if the therapist is a good fit for the couple and to identify the places the couple feels “stuck” in unhealthy patterns and cycles.

Next, the therapist will meet with each partner individually for one session each in order to better understand the perspectives of each person. No information shared during this time will be considered “secret”; the individual sessions will just give the therapist time to align with each partner.

The remaining sessions will be joint sessions where the therapist meets with the couple and develops a deeper understanding and connection with the relational dynamics. The couple will have a chance to develop new ways of understanding each other (i.e. why their partner behaves the way they do). The therapist will rely heavily on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) techniques in order to bring about deeper connection and attachment.

“Perhaps it is true that we do not really exist until there is someone there to see us existing, we cannot properly speak until there is someone who can understand what we are saying in essence, we are not wholly alive until we are loved.”
– Alain de Botton
